What I did was I would see about what time he would go in the house and about that time I would take him outside and keep him out there until he pooped then when he came in I praised him and gave him a treat and would scratch his stomach.

There are liquids that are supposed to remove the smell, which attracts the dog to do it again. But the problem is usually training. Take the dog out on a leash, if the dog gets a good long walk he will need to go. Stand in one spot at intervals and say “potty” or what ever command you like, praise when it toilets correctly. Keep dog on leash or in crate in the house so it is always under supervision and control. I have always tied my puppies leashes around my waist and done housework or whatever. It teaches them who is in charge and makes them feel safe.

Clean that spot with an enzymatic cleaner. regular carpet cleaner doesn’t cut it – you need Nature’s Miracle to get the smell out.
And of course, don’t let your dog out of your sight. Reward him for making the right potty choices and don’t give him a chance to make that mistake again.

I am having the same problem…
I found a dog (shih tzu) running down the street a month ago. I looked for the owners for a month, placed ad in paper., called shelters..etc… No one has claimed her. So anyways.. I kept her.
Vet said she is about 9 month to a year old.. and she is NOT housebroken!!! I wonder if the owners got fed up with that and dumped her.
Anyways she is finally peeing on the puppy training Pee pads and outside.. but she has YET to poop outside!!!! It’s very frustrating.
Occasionally she poops on the training pads, but most of the time she hides and poops.
People say crate her.. well she barks nonstop in the crate, so I can’t do that. I just keep taking her outside and keep the pads down .. and hope for the best!!
    Good luck

If you spank them the dog will think that your hand is attacking him. Just clean the mess up and rub white vinegar on the spot. You won’t smell anything but to your dog it’ll smell pretty bad. Also watch your dog, they usually do weird stuff before they go to the bathroom. If you catch the dog doing it, distract him so he looks up and stops doing his business, then correct him by leading him to the right place. Let him finish then praise him.

A friend of mine tells me that you have to teach dogs early on; newspapers or the like will only get the dog classicsally cond to newspprs; takes much time and effort: point being if you can’t spare the time then forget it!
