Can I Build A Wall And Attach It To Carpet?

I want to build a wall in my basement. My house inspector found asbestos tiles beneath the carpet, so I’m reluctant to nail through the carpet, through the tiles into the concrete. So, can I use some sort of adhesive to attach the bottom of the wall to the carpet and nail the top and sides of the wall to the existing structure?

Use concrete nails and nail through the tile into the floor. The asbestos will not be a problem, because you are not producing any dust. Leave the tile under the carpet it will not cause any problems.

You’re going to have to remove the asbestos tiles at some point, so why not just go ahead and do it now. I realize that it’s expensive, but hey, it won’t get any cheaper.
To answer your question, I am unaware of any technique to attach a wall to the floor without using hardware.

The only way I can think of would be to cut the studs a little short and use wood wedges to add pressure to the bottom plate.
The two outside ones can be nailed against the framework. If you were to cut carpet away from where the bottom plate will sit a good construction adhesive will do.
I would suggest you check at the hardware store for the right one, probably a water based one.

people freak out a lot when they here “asbestos” and if you have been exposed to a lot of the dust for a good amount of time I would freak out too but as long as you are not sanding the tiles or somehow causing it to become airbourne I wouldn’t worry at all with it,go ahead as you originally planned.
    IMHO

Did he have the tiles tested for asbestos or did he say “may” contain asbestos? Don’t worry about it. Just nail through them. I would remove the carpet where the wall sits on the floor. But you can put the wall over the carpet if you wish.
