I recently purchased a house with obvious cat odor in the living room (I got a discount to pay for carpet replacement.) Before replacing the carpet, I tried Simple Solution Stain and Odor remover. I really soaked the carpet and the smell is gone. The stuff is great on carpet and laundry stains too. It totally removed a magic marker stain on a white carpet.
I buy the product at Petsmart, but I think you can get it at any large pet store.

Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for an hour before you vacuum.
Borax also works, and is great if you’re worried about fleas – it kills them.

take dry coffee grinds and sprinkle them onto the carpet , leave there all day while you are at work… come home and vacuum the rug ! My aunt did that when a skunk got into her house and sprayed her rug.

an inexpensive way is to sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let set for a while (go clean something else and come back) then vacuum it up. It’s a quick fix when you can’t do anything better.
My bathrooms are carpeted (rental house, not my idea!) and the litter box is in there, along with 3 males (you see what I’m getting at…) I sprinkle baking soda on the carpet about once a week and it seems to help.

First of all I would say you should rent a carpet cleaner.they arent expensive…prob $40 to do it yourself… Mold spores make carpet stink…along with old animal urine…spills…and what ever else has been down there….
After the carpet is DRY…this I would say a week…then sprinkle baking soda, or the carpet fresh powder…You don’t want to sprinkle anything on the carpets while they are still wet…b/c of the mold/mildew hazard.
Vaccum often and each time right before you do so sprinkle carpet fresh or the other stuff.

Sprinkle baking soda all over before leaving for work and vacuum when you get home. If than doesn’t work rent a shampooer from a local grocery or discount department store or hire a professional.
