How Can I Stop My Cat From Pulling Up The Carpet?

My cat has recently begun clawing up the carpet in my apartment. She claws at the carpet in corners and around the doors and the tacking strips (whatever they’re called) that transition the floor from carpet to linoleum. Any suggestions as to how to get her to stop? Or any home remedies that might work (the stuff you buy at pet stores doesn’t work)?

I am having this same problem right now too! This is the info I have found:
    1- Don’t declaw!
2- Understand your cat’s need to scratch.
    3- Forget punishment–it doesn’t work.
4- Provide a suitable place for your cat to scratch.
5- Make the scratching post attractive to Kitty– i.e. use sisal posts.
6- Make the place she’s been scratching unattractive–physical or scent related deterrents.
7- Whenever possible, start cats young.
8- You may want to trim your cat’s claws.
9- For indoor cats, consider Soft Paws® as extra insurance, or an easy alternative.
Also recommended is to put aluminum foil or double-sided tape or “sticky strips” in the areas they are scratching, as they do not like these textures. Hope this helps!

Declaw your cat. I don’t think it hurts them.

Let her out? Or put her out when she does it? I had one that used to chew the foam backing off when she got bored or thought we ought to get up and play with her.

Cats need to scratch to keep their claws clean and in good shape. Get her something to scratch like a log. They like to scratch the bark. Don’t get her one of those cat things covered with carpet or she won’t see the difference between one carpet and the other. I got my cat a round thing about 18″ across that has corrugated cardboard inthe center and a track with a ball along the outside rim. She loves it and never scratches the carpet.

a squirt gun works pretty good, but you have to catch them in the act.

Go to your local pet store, they might be able to help you out. But I think all you need is to buy a small, old rug for your cat to claw so you’re both happy-your cat can claw whenever she wants to and you have a normal carpet!
