New Carpet Over Old Carpet? Can Old Carpet Be Used As The Padding?
Can the old carpet be used as padding instead of getting new padding. The old carpet is worn thin and is just old. Getting new carpet and new furniture but trying to save some cash on the padding. Is this a good idea?

Not recommended at all, Padding is cheap compared to the smell of dog and cat urine plus smoke in the existing capet and padding. Treat yourself to new padding, you will be happy in the longrun. Addition: If your old carpet is worn and thin you floor will not be level.

I would not do this. First, you will be burying old dirt. Second, the install will not be simple since you will need to trim off the outer inch or so of the old carpet to expose the tack strip.
Also, carpet padding is very inexpensive.

tear everything up and clean the bare floor. then get some cheep padding and use that. the expensive padding is just too dam thick anyway.

no get new padding. Its not that expanse. And it will look better and smell better. Carpet keeps a otter after so many years.
