My son in law used carpet tape on an old wood floor and now the tape is stuck to the floor boards. it has been down about eight months.

warm it with a hairdryer and scrape it off gently with a none metallic scraper. after that use washing up liquid and water on a sponge to get up the sticky residue. it will probably take a while, but this way you stand less of a chance of causing damage to the wood. i would normally say WD40, but it will leave a stain if it is natural wood.

In addition to Val f1 nutter’s answer, get rid of residulal glue with surgical spirit (available at pharmacies) or white spirit (from DIY outlets).

WD40 should remove it but may take off varnish or paint underneath.

Have you tried lighter fluid?
It’s great for removing sticky labels off of shoes and glasses, without destroying the item. good luck c
