How Can I Stop My Cat Clawing The Carpet?
My cat has plenty of scratching poles and boards, which he uses as well. I do not want to have him declawed. And squirting him with water DOES NOT work.
My cat is a much loved pet but is totally destroying my carpet. Is there a remiedy of something I can place on the carpet? Help I need advice on what to do.
He is an inside cat, so I have tried clipping his nails, but that just seems to make him want to do it more – to sharpen his claws I assume.

Cats have scent glands on their paws, so when they begin to scratch somewhere, it leaves a smell that they have a need to top up regularly with new scent. Your cat keeps returning to scratch the carpet because the smell tells him to.
Try covering the affected area of carpet with a heavy duty plastic mat for a couple of weeks. This will give the scent time to fade and may help break the habit. Alternatively, you can try spraying the area with Feliway once a day for 21 days. (Cats rarely scratch areas that they chin rub, and Feliway mimics that scent.)

the one thing i found to be the best is just putting a bit of pepper on the carpet where they like the best. maybe this will help. when they sniff the pepper they will go away from that spot. (with a big firm NO) when it looks like he is gunna do it again. and it is easy to vacum up.
good luck.

I would advise you to try to make the scratching poles more attractive to him, perhaps with some catnip.
And perhaps putting something the cat might dislike him scratching in other places, like garlic or chili pepper, (I used that in plant vases, NOT in carpets)
I’ve seen some products that are odorless for humans that can be use for this purpose, perhaps you can find this in a pet store.
Good luck!

After reading all you tried about the only thing you can do is lightly slap him when he’s doing it to get him to stop, did that with my cat when she kept jumping up on a couch she wasn’t allowed to sleep on.

Get a scratching pad or post and buy some liquid catnip. Put it in the cat’s favorite spot to scratch. Whenever you see the cat scratch anything else, lightly smack him on the head and put his/her claws on the post. It may take a while but it worked for all five of my cats.

DO NOT follow the advice about tapping the cat you should NEVER even tap a cat they arent dog and even dogs shouldnt be spanked, go to a local pet store and they make something you sprinkle on your carpet, humans cant smell, but cats hate, it should work,
Good luck!
