What Brand/type/grade Carpet Do You Recommend For Heavy Use In Living Room?
We aren’t trying to make a statement with the carpet, just want something basic. We will be living in the house a few years so it has to hold up. I can’t think of any obvious reason for lots of stains (like untrained pets in the house), but our mid-priced carpet looks worse from stains than from wear. No pets, babies, or special demands on the carpet. Recommendations of any sort appreciated.
Thanks,
Houyhnhnm

If stains are the issue then the quality of carpet may not make that much difference. You might go for a carpet color that will not show stains as much. Or try using area rugs over the carpet in the areas most prone to stains.

I recommend that you install Berber carpeting. It wears like iron and cleans up easily. Something neutral, like an oatmeal color will not only look fine with whatever decor you use, but will also appeal to a new buyer, when you decide to move.
It is textured, and not very deep pile, so it vacuums easily, without leaving vacuum cleaner track lines. Also stains come out easily. A multi-color texture won’t show small stains and wear. If you like a cush-ier feel under your feet, just upgrade the padding underneath. It’s a very inexpensive way to get a more luxurious feel.
Berber is available in lots of colors, grades, textures. Just choose one you like, in price range that is affordable to you. And pat yourself on the back for making a choice that will look great, feel wonderful, hold up to kids & pets, and enhance re-sale value.
Good luck!
