the best way is to first treat it with white vinegar and water and after that use natures miracle or another enzyme formula

do not use a steam cleaner as this sets the stain in the carpet. If you use vinegar it needs to be diluted with water- using plain vinegar can cause an amonia smell and cause the dog to urinate in the same place. You can also get urine out ( sold at lowes home improvement ) it comes with a black light and cleaner it works really well though @ $19.99 per set it is expensive.

I usually use vinegar. If you use different stuff on there then that probably makes the smell worse but try vinegar and see if that works. It always works for me.
    I hope I helped!

You can use vinegar or get a solution from the store that is specifically made for this. Nature’s Miracle, Simple Solution, etc. You have to let the solution soak as far into the carpet as the urine did. It might take more than once. Read the directions on the product and use as directed.

I use “20 Mule Team Borax.” It’s a powder you can buy in the laundry section at Wal-Mart. Just sprinkle it on the spot, leave it for 24 hours, then vacuum it up. It gets the smell out better than vinegar or baking soda or any of the fancy (and expensive) stuff you can buy.
It also works on cat urine.
