How Can I Tell What Type Of Carpet Is In The Basement Of The House I Bought?
Basement carpet got ruined during the recent storms in the midwest. I know the insurance adjuster will determine what it is and what it’s worth, but I’d like to figure that out independently to ensure it’s a fair value.
I have a piece of the carpet that had a label on the back of it, with a Griege number (dye lot?) and some other numbers, though no brand name. Can I figure out what it is from that?
Thanks!
(It’s a type of Berber, but I have no idea what material, etc.)

Perhaps your best bet is to take your sample to a carpet store that has been in business for a while, one of the older well established stores in your town, and ask an experienced saleperson for their opinion. If they are truely experienced they will be able to help you. If you have doubts as to their knowledge, go to another store. Places like Home Depot that also sells carpet is not a good choice.

If it is Berber it should be wool, but then again it might be a mix.Try the burn test. Light a thread, if it burns with a pungent odour it is wool.If it burns and melts, its nylon. If it burns brightly with an odour,it is probably wool and nylon/rayon etc.
