I've had them for 5 yrs. and I wash them on cold/cold permanent press regular detergent... The backing looks/feels brand new.. I've only dried them in the dryer and handful of times.... Actually, I either just put them on the floor damp from the washer or hang them over the tub or shower rod to dry. If they are really dirty, I will soak them ( just shut off the machine and let them sit in the soapy water, then turn the machine back on).
