Probably take out the carpeting in the closet and replace the pad underneath and the carpet in that section.

Do what you can to dry the area. Use baking soda.
Sprinkle the powder down, beat it into the carpet and then leave it for a few hours. Then vacuum it up and repeat if necessary. Try it maybe 3 times.
If that doesn't work you may need to replace the carpet.

If baking soda doesn't work, and you don't want to pull up the carpet if you rent - then buy a bag of regular charcoal briquets. Not the ones that already have the lighter fluid on them - just plain black ones. Open the bag and let it absorb the smell. If you notice it coming back - replace the bag. I do this in my husband's shoe closet and it totally kills the odors of his smelly feet.

You should try Baking soda... Baking Soda deodorizes carpets, when you sprinkle the baking soda directly on the smelly spot to neutralize odors that settle in carpet.Sprinkle on, wait 15 minutes, and vacuum up.

You may have to remove the carpet. And you may find that the padding is wet or has been wet, with formation of mold.
If there was ever a water leak near the closet, that could be the cause. Even water from a distant leak will tend to "crawl" along the walls along points of least resistance.
If the carpet is salvageable, it can be cleaned and reinstalled.
