Use baking soda. Sprinkle the powder down, beat it into the carpet and then leave it for a few hours. Then vacuum it up and repeat if necessary. Try it maybe 3 times. Not the ones that already have the lighter fluid on them - just plain black ones. Open the bag and let it absorb the smell. If you notice it coming back - replace the bag. I do this in my husband's shoe closet and it totally kills the odors of his smelly feet.
